Most visitors to Big Bear Lake know The Village — the alpine-style shopping and dining strip that anchors downtown. But ask a local where they'd live, and a lot of them will point south, to Moonridge. This is the residential side of the mountain: quiet streets under tall pines, bigger lots, family homes, and — for visitors who know about it — some of the lake's best attractions without the Village crowds.

Moonridge sits on the south side of Big Bear Lake, tucked between the water and the slopes. It's a neighborhood, not a tourist district, which is exactly the point. Here's what makes it worth knowing — and why we put our cabin here.

The Big Bear Alpine Zoo

The neighborhood's anchor attraction is the Big Bear Alpine Zoo, one of the most genuinely meaningful stops on the mountain. This isn't a conventional zoo: it's a rehabilitation facility for injured, orphaned, and human-raised wild animals that can't be released back into the wild. Residents include black bears, mountain lions, gray wolves, bobcats, birds of prey, and more.

It's small, walkable, and perfect as a half-day outing — kids tend to love it, and adults are usually surprised by how much they learn. The zoo sits right in Moonridge, about 0.6 miles from Big Bear Reset, close enough that you could stroll over on a nice morning. In winter, pair the visit with eagle watching: Big Bear Lake is a known wintering ground for bald eagles, and spotting one circling over the water is a real thrill.

Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain

A Big Bear institution. The bobsled-style Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain has been sending riders down its quarter-mile track for decades — you steer your own sled down a concrete chute through the pines, which is exactly as fun as it sounds. The same complex runs other mountain-coaster style attractions and has long been a classic family stop.

It's the kind of place that has barely changed in the best possible way: old-school, unpretentious family fun. Put it on the itinerary between a zoo morning and a hot-tub evening and you've had a perfect Moonridge day.

Coffee and Breakfast on the South Side

One of Moonridge's quiet advantages: you don't have to drive to The Village for your morning coffee. The neighborhood has its own cluster of coffee shops and breakfast spots serving the locals — the kind of places where the barista recognizes regulars and the line moves fast even on a Saturday morning.

Our honest advice: skip the drive across town on your first morning. Find the nearest Moonridge coffee shop, get your bearings, and save The Village for the afternoon stroll. There's something about starting your day like a local — coffee in hand, pines overhead, no parking hunt — that sets the tone for the whole trip.

The Pine Streets Themselves

This is the part that doesn't make it into the brochures. Moonridge's residential streets are worth experiencing on their own terms: winding roads under towering Jeffrey pines, cabins tucked into the trees, the smell of pine and woodsmoke in the air. Morning walks here are genuinely beautiful — deer aren't uncommon, the light filters through the canopy, and it's quiet enough to actually hear the wind.

For runners and walkers, the neighborhood is a natural loop. For photographers, golden hour through the pines is as good as anything on the lake. For everyone else, it's just a reminder of what mountain living actually feels like when the day-trippers go home.

Close to Everything That Matters

Moonridge's location is the real cheat code. It's the quiet side of the lake, but nothing is far:

  • Bear Mountain Resort: ~0.8 miles. This is the headline. In ski season, you can sleep in, make coffee, and still beat the crowds to first chair — then be back in the hot tub by afternoon. No shuttle, no Village traffic, no parking lot expedition.
  • Snow Summit: the sister resort, a short drive across the lake. Two mountains, one neighborhood.
  • The Village: a few minutes' drive when you want dinner, shopping, or après-ski energy. Close enough to enjoy, far enough that you don't hear it.
  • Big Bear Lake itself: the south-shore access points are right there for summer kayaking, paddleboarding, and lakeside walks.

You get the residential calm without giving up a thing on access. That's the trade that makes Moonridge the local favorite.

What Moonridge Is Not

Worth being honest: if you want to step out your front door into nightlife, Moonridge isn't it. Evenings here are quiet — that's the feature, not the bug. The Village is where the bars and buzz are, and it's an easy drive. But if your idea of a perfect mountain evening is the hot tub steaming under string lights with the pines overhead, you already know which side of the lake you belong on.

Also note: Moonridge streets are residential mountain roads. In winter they're plowed like everything else in Big Bear, but after a big storm, take the last stretch slow. Chains or cables in the car and a 4x4 or AWD vehicle are strongly recommended December through March — the standard mountain playbook.

Staying in Moonridge: Big Bear Reset

This is why our cabin is here and not in The Village. Big Bear Reset is a Moonridge cabin built for exactly this kind of trip: 0.8 miles to Bear Mountain, 0.6 miles to the Zoo, on a quiet pine-tree street where the loudest sound is the wind.

The cabin sleeps 8 guests across 3 bedrooms — a king master suite with its own wood-burning stove, a queen room, and a bunk room that sleeps four — so it works for families, friend groups, or two couples. The amenities match the neighborhood vibe: a private hot tub for post-mountain soaks, a wood-burning fireplace, a game room with pool table and arcade games, and a full gourmet kitchen for cooking together.

Dogs are welcome (pet-friendly by design, with a fenced yard), the wifi is fast, and guests have left 4.7 stars across 140+ reviews. Come see why the locals' side of the mountain is the side worth staying on.
